That's strange. All eye tests are free for those over 60 unless you ask for extra tests. I paid £10 extra for one of those back of the eyes photos but I asked for it and we discussed it beforehand.
If you've been charged erroneously then you can always ask for a refund. (As I had to do because they charged me twice for that photo! Cheeky.)
As JGB1955 says, ask them why you have been charged. Don't just pay up without knowing why. That's crazy. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. as above any optician with an NHS contract must offer a basic NHS test covered by the NHS. Anything above that is chargeable. Common charges are for contact lens work , OCT scans , dry eye management , glaucoma management etc.
The NHS is cutting funding in relative terms so more opticians are working to the letter of the contract which goes way back to the 1950s!
I would expect over the next decade that a lot of practices will cut back on loss leading NHS work and focus more on private.
I know of 1 small town (10,000 ) in our county that has no NHS provision as I see some patients from that area.
To be honest the whole contract probably needs to be renegotiated but wont be a priority.0
