I don't like gravy at all, no matter what I'm eating so meat cooked in gravy is a no no for me!  I always roast the meat at the same time as the potatoes.  Potatoes get moved to top of oven when the meat comes out to rest and while the veg are cooked.  Works well for us.

See now, it's the thought of roast tatties and gravy which encourages me to actually make a roast, on the rare event that I do! I could live without pretty much all of the rest of it!  It's another reason I make sausage and mash every so often. I suppose we're all just different. :)

  • I'm not a great fan of meat - not vegetarian, just don't particularly like it so don't eat much. I would cook a large joint at the same time as the veg and then slice the rest of it and freeze in portions so for the next few roasts I didn't have to cook the meat, just defrost a portion for my husband while I have just the vegetables. But it is nicer freshly cooked so I would have some when I first cooked it but not after that.

Hot, cooked in the same day and not let to rest for too long so it goes cold.
Never understood the cooking of the day before thing. You want it sat on the table being carved so you can argue about whose having the crunchy end bits or the crispy skin/crackling. Not cut up and already served with soggy crackling.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I'd always cook the meat on the day but if someone else is cooking for me I'm not going to complain about it.  We would have left overs one day in the week so at some point we'd be reheating cooked meat.
  • I never knew serving cold meat was a thing til I started going out with my now husband. His parents did this, the first time I had it it actually turned my stomach a little as the turkey and ham were freezing cold out of the fridge (and therefore a little tough) and then smothered with piping hot gravy and hot potatoes and veg 🤢
He thought this was normal but now he hates it too. We are from NI.

It shouldn't be a thing lol. Think I'd struggle to hold that down too!  :D

Well you live and learn as they say, it’s the first time I’ve heard of cooking the roast the day before and then serving cold with gravy the day after.

We have a roast virtually every Sunday and I cook it on the day, but do rest it wrapped in foil for about 20mins while the Yorkshire puds finish.  There is always leftovers because I’m often only cooking for two of us now, so we sometimes have the same on a Monday (warmed in the microwave) or I might use the leftover meat for a curry or a pie or depending on the meat (beef or chicken only ) serve leftovers  cold with chips and peas, but couldn’t imagine cold meat with gravy.

isn’t it strange how our tastes differ so much, which I think is a good thing.
