Lightening the colour of a navy jumper?

I have a lovely warm Aran jumper which I rarely wear because the colour is too dark and sombre. Has anyone ever tried to lighten up a colour? I have been through the index and on the Dylon site to see if there is any special product to do this with but I can't find any clues. I am thinking of trying a few drops of bleach in a lot of water, but finding it a little bit scary.
Anyone done this?
Thanks for any hints!

Could try a bit of bleach - that's the only thing I could think of which would lighten it.
I used to work in a lettuce processing plant in my vacations and we processed lettuce for those packets of salad you get in the supermarkets. Anyhoo - the stuff was dipped in water and chemical stuff - and I don't know what this chemical stuff was (bleach to some degree I'd wager) but it eventually faded our clothes quite evenly (except for the legs of trousers tucked inside our wellies!).
I'm not suggesting wool is anything like lettuce or jeans but I reckon a few drops really well mixed in with lots of water would do it.
Best of luck.0 -
Needless to say - I don't buy those packets of salad anymore it put me right off.
Should've worked in a chocolate factory instead....0 -
Thanks scrimpingbadger, I think I will take the plunge. The jumper being blue, I sort of hope I might get a jeans style effect if not perfectly even. As for the salad, when I lived in Turkey in the mid-eighties, many American expats used to wash their lettuce in potassium per-manganate (spelling?) which is basically Milton fluid. It didn't help, they would catch hepatitis almost without fail. (In those days you could not be vaccinated yet. ) European expats never bothered and were mostly healthy. So I don't believe in overdoing disinfecting and will not eat bleached i.e pre-packed salad either."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

I remember getting some Dylon stuff that took out stains or dye or oooh I can't remember precisely and I used it on a brand new cream and navy cotton jumper which got caught in the wash with something red. Anyway the long and the short of it was that it came out a very nice ivory and grey colour. So I am quite sure it will work quite well but grey is probably going to be the result. It was very even from memory.0
