Jacking in a job

I'm struggling feeling valued at work. I dont feel valued at my current work because of nepotism. I'm good at my job, in fact I'm doing very well for the business but they only want family on the board of directors. They dont directly say this, but have told me there isnt anywhere for me to go. It appears I'm expected to keep doing the same job I am.
If you read this far, I have just removed the remuneration figure from the title, its a lot but there is no need to post it.
I have a 6 month notice period. If i were to leave, at the end of the notice period, i have no job. I would use the time to find one, and if not, I have a couple of years grace before I would need to. (remortgage date).
If you felt this way, would you consider this type of action?

Yes.
I did the same in 2020. I then volunteered for a year and never looked back.
I had savings, like you, and just decided to make the jump. My notice was long and I won't lie, it was hard to work, but I don't regret it for a moment.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....1 -
It's not nepotism; it's their company and they are perfectly entitled to keep control of it within the family. If you don't like that then yes, by all means leave.1

If the situation at work is incongruent with your personal outlook then seriously consider walking. The 6 month notice period would be something I'd be looking to trim, any prospect of movement there?1

Call a few agencies, make some preliminary enquiries.
If you're good at your job, you might be surprised at the offers that come back.
There may be strong incentives to move, a keen employer might even cover any costs incurred to get you on board sooner.
I think you're in a far stronger position while still in employment, so start looking now.
If it doesn't work out, you'll have a far better perspective as to staying or leaving.
Good luck with it!1 -
Yes, I would not only consider it, I'd do it. I have done, in the past. Because if you are working hard but feeling no satisfaction, it's disheartening and depressing and you could well end up having to have time off because of stress and depression anyway. Not only that, most of us spend too much time at work to be miserable every single day.
If you are a conscientious worker with good experience and qualifications, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get a job within, or even after, the six month notice period. Often in life, things don't actually change until we ourselves make the first move towards change, if you see what I mean. In my working history I've left two jobs with no job to go to and found something else to tide me over whilst I searched for a better post each time. I was never without work. Although I'm now retired I'm still working but this time for myself. I feel better about this as I have the small cushion of a couple of pensions.
A big salary isn't everything. It's never impressed me much anyway. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. If your salary doesn't make you feel sufficiently valued, and you have 'nowhere to go', what do you think you'll feel like in a year? Two years...? What's making you stay?The_Real_Cheddar_Bob said:

I suspect many family firms have only family members on their board. That may be short sighted as 'outsiders' may see the whole setup as potentially holding the company back. The value of a non-family employee should be shown by way of their remuneration, not by giving them a place on the board.

What does "holding the whole company back" mean to a family firm though? There's no point showing them that they can make more money as a company if the company is no longer doing what the family want it to do. It's theirs. It's not like a public owned company where profit is the only measure of success. They might all enjoy working there as it is and not want it to change.TELLIT01 said:I suspect many family firms have only family members on their board. So to conclude this thread. I did it. I'm now on 6 months garden leave. New horizons ahead. Thanks to those that gave comment, although I would conclude my mind was mostly made up at the time of posting.2
