Our daughter wants a salt and pepper diamond - one with so many inclusions they become a design feature - as an engagement ring and is looking at this specific ring from a company in South Africa. It is a young company so there are very few reviews. My question is what should we understand and ask before buying online? We are not interested in the future value of the stone - just the quality and the workmanship.

Why are you, as your daughter's parents, choosing / supporting her engagement ring?

Isn't this for her betrothed to sort?

Hi, if you pop onto the Society of British Jewellers Facebook group someone there will be able to help you with that question.

    1) By "we" I mean all current/future family members.
    2) See your screen name.

I suggest you get in touch with some of the jewellers in Birmingham's jewellery quarter.  Lots of them will make rings to your specification and they will also advise on a salt and pepper diamond.

When I got engaged, none of my family nor my fiance's were involved at all. Apart, that is, from the big party they threw us when they did know.

    Is this a new thing?

And notwithstanding that you may think Grumpy_chap is living up to his name, he does have a point.

I think the rings here in the UK are better, for example from this maker/seller. They just look a little bit classier to me and they're not as expensive.

I'm not sure I'd want to source something as important as a diamond engagement ring from outside the UK.

Have you researched companies in the UK?

FTR, My fiance(s) and I chose my ring(s). None of the current/future family members were involved.
