sorry, i meant 'harm' as in the email couldnt cause any physical damage to the computer by someone opening it, you are correct though, many have unique image url's for every email and by the image being downloaded can confirm whether an address is live or not.

but then again, simply by receiving such an email you are already on a spammers list anyway!

Yes, but by opening their email, you confirm it is a valid and active email address, which makes it much more valuable to sell on, so you will get even more emails as a result.

Though I was under the impression that it was possible for someone without the proper security to jeopardise their PC just by opening an html email. I thought things had moved on since the only risk was opening attachments?
