NI Class 3 direct debit start date

My wife will qualify for the full new state pension if she contributes another 13 years before 5th April 2035.

The application form to pay by direct debit asks for the date to start.

Would the best date be 6th April 2022?

I realise that the first payment will not be before May, but my thinking is that making it effective from 6/4/22 leaves the option of paying a lump sum for 2020/21 and 2021/22 at a lower rate.

I'd suggest putting whatever day of the month she wants the DD to go out, and start it in April - she's likely to miss the first payment whatever day of the month she puts, and I'm not sure how HMRC will handle it.
Incidentally, do you now have to fill in a paper application form ?
When I set mine up (pre-Covid) I simply phoned them up and they were able to both set up the DD on the spot and provide me with the necessary reference details to make a Faster Payment bank transfer for a previous year

    Thank you.

I do have a paper form, but we do need to phone them anyway for a lump sum payment.

That does sound like a good option for us.

We sent the form in on 11th April and they received it on 14th April, as per the progress report on her PTA online.

Since then, there has been no change even though they show the estimated completion date as 5th May.

Has anyone set up a direct debit for monthly class 3 NI payments, and if so, how and when do they confirm the date of the first DD payment?

Still haven't heard anything, so we spoke to them and they were surprised at the 5th May completion date. They said it usually took about three months.

They said we should receive a letter in the next 2 or 3 weeks.
