Back when I had to do self assessment I had terrible trouble with getting fined. Year 1, form sent in via standard post. Said they couldn't find it. Got fined. Year 2 form sent in via recorded delivery. Still said they couldn't find it. Still got fined despite having notification it was signed for. Year 3, physically went to the tax office and got a hand written receipt from reception with name printed and signature. Didn't get fined that year.0
