If you are self employed and qualify to pay Class 2 NICs they will cost you £163.80 for 2022-23. As an expat working for a foreign company I just paid voluntary Class 2 NICs of £158.60 for 2021-22.

Doing some sort of self-employment would usually be a lower bar. Maybe in the gig economy if it isn't possible to monetise their hobbies, however unprofitably?

To make ebay sales qualify as sole trader self employment, you'd need to be either buying stock for resale, or making things to sell. Simply flogging your surplus tat won't count.
