Recommendations on how to eat well on a budget?

Oh for the street markets
where I live they are sadly long gone now, and even no independant greengrocer either, its the big supermarkets or nothing at all.
I do miss the markets they were great and handy if you only wanted a small amount and it went into your veg bag, of which mine was a string net one , tucked into my normal shopping bag so no plastic used at most brown paper bags instead.
At the moment we still have a wet fish shop in my little town but know idea how long he will last..
I definitely would say meal plan and work around what you have already in stock. I spend about a third of my budget on fruit and veg, I've cut back a bit on meat as its really become a luxury ,I probaly eat more meals with less meat now than I did but I don't mind a veggie curry, lasagne or chilli as I do enjoy spicy food.
Fish especially fresh, and be streetched by turning it into fish pie, or fish cakes and a tin of sardines can be turned into pate.
Lots of You Tube stuff will give you lots of ideas.
A good pot of HM soup made with wonky or reduced veg will make a filling healthy meal, and a soup'n' sweet meal, basically soup, bread and butter, and a pudding will fill anyones tummy for a low cost I like a nice rice pud made in my slow cooker or a semolina pud, not keen on tapioca though (too much like school dinners)
An ordinary eating apple sliced and diced and cooked in a little water and honey until soft then drained and a dollop of rice pudding on top that will fill you up and an ending to your soup and bread and butter main course Cheap ,filling and not too unhealthy
