If they took it from your current account, to pay another account where you are overdrawn or have a credit card, then the usual/stock answer here is "yes, read the terms and conditions of the card and they'll say they do this"

Yes thay can do this it's a bit of a shock isn't it. You probably need to open another bank account, one that isnt connected to RBS and get your money paid into it so you then decide who you are going to pay, coop basic account is good. sounds like you might need some help re your accident as well. if you're having financial difficulties there are varius charities you can speak to who will advise you. try CCCS or payplan or citizens advice bereau.
  • Banks can use the right of "set-off" to recover money not paid to a linked debt (within the same banking group) however, they should have given you fair prior notice. They should also not deduct large sums from a benefit income. If you are on reduced sick pay, SSP, and this event has caused you hardship. I would complain to the bank and ask for at least a partial refund. Do please contact one of the agencies listed above for further advice. The financial ombudsman takes a dim view of this practice if it leaves the client vulnerable or unable to buy essentials such as food or to pay for heating etc.
  • I had the same thing happen with the Halifax - ironically I only found out when I went to take cash out to pay my Halifax credit card bill!
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
