Election Day staff

There are local government elections coming up the first Thursday in May.  Every polling station needs at least two staff members - a Poll Clerk and a Presiding Officer.  It’s a long day - 0630 - 2200 but it’s money for old rope, especially for the Poll Clerk.  Wages vary from council to council but a PC can expect to take home £180ish after tax.  After three or four goes as PC you can apply to be a Presiding Officer, there is very little extra work and you can expect another £100.

They always need more staff for the polling stations also for the count, though that is shorter, often late at night and not as well paid

    I've done it 3 times.

It's a really long day and you're not allowed a break except to use the toilet or make a drink.  You can't leave either.

I was asked to get there earlier to help set up and stay later to clear up.  By the 5 pm I was struggling to concentrate.

PC is an easy job though.  I got about £150 after deductions.
Treat others how you would like to be treated. 🤞

Also, factor in potentially taking a day off work as well.

You do have to pickup the paper work beforehand and drop it off afterwards. You also have to manage the Poll Clerk(s) and if anything goes wrong it is on you, not the Poll Clerk.
