VAT query

Looking for looking for advice please.
we are having building work done and the builder is VAT registered. One of his subcontractors is not VAT registered and his quote to us did not include VAT. When our builder invoices us for this work should we expect to pay VAT on it. Thank you

Why would a subcontractor send you a quote? By definition his customer is the contractor, not you.

It might well be that the reverse charge applies, in which case none of the subcontractors would charge VAT to the contractor. However, if the work is subject to VAT, then the contractor will charge you VAT, whether his subcontractors are registered for VAT or not.

Yes, you'll get charged VAT if the main contractor invoices you.  To avoid the VAT, you need the sub contractor to invoice you directly.
  • Thank you both for the answers- they’ve really helped - much appreciated. Jeremy just to clarify the original quote from the builder included an approx value for the subcontractors work - things have moved on since then requiring more work than originally thought hence the revised quote. Many thanks.
