Soap saver thingy

Options
When I was a kid in the mid-1950s, mother invested in a plastic thing which was a bit like two tea-strainers face-to-face as it were, but on one common handle about maybe 10" long.  One of the "tea strainers" was hinged to the other and it somehow snapped shut.  The idea was that you opened it, put in your scrag ends of soap, closed it up, then whisked the thing in water to give you soapy water for washing.

Does anybody know if anything similar is available today?

I've seen pictures of these - mainly antique and imported. Nothing modern for sale at all (as it strikes me as a good idea too - looking at the washing up soap bars on this very forum).

The only think I can think of is a bag, but it might very easily get a bit grubby and slimy.

Would it actually work all that well?  I find when you get down to the last sliver of soap it doesn't seem to lather for some reason.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

A snap ball tea strainer with handle off Amazon might do the trick.

I have a sisal bag too. Got mine from a wholefood shop. I was going to knit one but the only sisal I could find online was quite expensive.  If I'd wanted more than one it might have been worth it .

I use solid shampoo and I keep it in the foot of a pair of tights knotted at the top to keep it in.  It lasts for months that way.
We use to do that at Guide camp (in the 80s/90s) so that the soap was to hand and didn't get slung away with dirty water by mistake ( as most campsites did not have running water beyond a basic tap)

It would probably work just as well with a towelling sock.

  • If you get an empty hand soap bottle, you can add a little water and then grate left over soap into it and keep swilling it/adding water or soap to get the right consistency. Storing it somewhere warm helps, like the airing cupboard x
