in Cutting tax
Hi all - looking for some insight re emergency tax and PAYE figures please as I am none the wiser...
Background:
- Working as a temp Sept 2020-Dec 2021, employed directly by temp agency.
- Made permanent with NHS Trust from Jan 2022 - Band 5. Employed directly by Trust.
- In addition to salary basic rate, I have a set on-call rate each month.
- I was emergency taxed in Jan due to not having P45 from temp agency in time - tax code BR.
- My tax code was corrected for my Feb pay, but my PAYE figures are wildly different for Feb and March. I understand they can differ but there seems to be quite a discrepancy with the figures (see below).
- Currently in the process of applying for a mortgage, so I really need to know roughly what my net pay is going to be each month moving forward - at the moment I have no idea as each month's net pay has been so different.
- As a side note, my NHS pension contributions seem to have jumped up a % bracket since Jan for Feb and March, despite my banding not being changed - not sure why this is?
Questions:
- When can I expect a refund for the emergency tax? Apparently this will be via my employer rather than needing to make a claim with HMRC
- Why has my pension % changed for (seemingly) no reason?
Thanks in advance!
--------------------------------------------------
PAYE
Jan: £392.80 Tax code BR
Feb: £73.60 Tax code 1257L
March: £195.60 Tax code 1257L
PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS
Jan: NHS Pension 7.1%
Feb: NHS Pension 9.3%
March: NHS Pension 9.3%

Without any salary details and those while working from the agency it will be difficult to comment.0

BR is not emergency tax.
The emergency tax code is 1257L.
Your tax "refund" will almost certainly be why you only paid £73.60 in tax that month i.e. you have already had it.
You shouldn't be expecting anything more.
If for some reason you are then perhaps you could post the following details,
Total taxable pay to date from March payslipTotal tax deducted to date from March payslipTax code from March payslip
And confirm if the figures include the taxable pay from your agency job and the NHS job.0 -
I think you've already had your overpaid tax back in your February (and possibly March) pay, that's how it would normally work, and in the absence of a full set of data that's what looks to have happened for you. I don't know what the basis for NHS pension rates is but I'd imagine 9.3% is likely to be the correct figure going forward.

Thanks all for comments so far.
Salary: £25,655
plus on call rate per month of £96.21
As a temp I was paid weekly which varied dependent on my hours and whether I was on call or not. Average weekly pay around £370.
Looking at my P45 from the agency, the total tax to date figure is £2049.40.

But I think it's irrelevant, you've no doubt had the benefit of the refund in February.1
