Is this a fidelity pension scam?

Hi, just wondered if anyone can help me decide if I am being scammed with please?

Persons claiming to work for a company called fidelity with whom I had a work based pension with over 12years ago. I transferred out of this pension when I changed jobs but I am being contacted now by these people saying they made a mistake and didn't transfer the correct amount (it’s a bit more complicated than that). They now want me to provide them with my bank details so they can pay me the money.

They have a web page called retirement.fidelity. co.uk/remediation (sorry I can’t add links to this page)

They have also sent letters and emails but the emails don’t contain a message, just a link to the message.

Anyone else experience this? Or have a view on whether I should provide them with my bank details?

I would phone their Workplace Investing Service Centre to check it's not a scam.  Their number can be found at Fidelity contact numbers - Call us for account support | Fidelity

This is a genuine Fidelity website https://retirement.fidelity.co.uk/remediation/ which says you have received a genuine letter and should trust the number provided however there's nothing stopping any scammer quoting that website link so it's not a very good solution to stopping scams and it could be argued that the existence of that genuine website is very exploitable.
If you have any suspicions then send them a secure message or call them on their normal published number and ask to be transferred if required preferably from another phone if called incase a scammer has not terminated the call on the current phone.

Emails are not considered a secure method of communication. So, it is normal to use email to direct you to the real message on their website where you can see it is genuine.

    They have also sent letters

What details are given in the letters about how the mistake arose?

There is an address/telephone number/named contact on the letters?

have you checked the address/telephone number against Fidelity's own web site?

If you're worried, ask them to send you a cheque, which means you won't have to give them any details - they've already written to you, so clearly have your address.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Although the "remediation" webpage does quote a phone number (and an 0800 one at that) so it's a way of validating that you're phoning the correct people.

  • Thank you everyone for your advice, it is much appreciated. They had previously told me that they couldn’t provide Payment by cheque. After challenging this they have now agreed to send a cheque. Many thanks all :)
