Yes the laptop I had required newer Windows for which I didn’t want to pay.  I bought Mac because:
I wanted desktop not a laptop as it’s better due to ergonomy.
I had ergonomy assessment by occupational heath but again they would not pay or provide any devices, such as laptop stands etc. they told me to purchase ergonomic equipment from Amazon. I wanted all in one which doesn’t take up loads of space.
Mac OS is supported and in the future can be upgraded for free, I think/hope.

My company had same policy of working on own device even during pandemic when it was mandated. So it was not just a choice to work from home during given tax year, it was mandated.
This is a large multinational company so I’m sure the policy they have it’s perfectly legal. They know people make enough money to buy their own computers.
now they are even moving towards asking us to install some apps on our own phones to generate codes to log in into the workstations even in the office and most people did that already.
Not mentioning that years ago they removed physical phones and it’s all virtual, however when it doesn’t work people are expected to join meetings using they personal phones/minutes/data.

That is all between the workforce and the employer.

Why should HMRC  give tax relief because your employer refuses to provide equipment you need to do your work?

Can you go into the office to work and use his equipment.

The company appear from the comments made by the original poster to have reduced the number of computers they buy as the company tell their out of office employees to buy their own computers. Not all companies consider a basic computer as a capital purchase.

Therefore the main employer buys less computers and claims less allowances for computers in their corporate accounts. Using your logic of "Why should HMRC  give tax relief because your employer refuses to provide equipment you need to do your work?"

HMRC should allow some form of tax relief to the employee whether a capital write down or allow the employee to expense it against the employees PAYE earnings as HMRC would have allowed such sums to have been claimed by the employer if the employer had purchased the said computers.
