Marriage allowance gone pear shaped

After reading about marriage allowance claim on MSE my wife & I, both pensioners decided to claim. My wife, the non tax payer had to claim & did this over the phone.After doing all the security checks etc. the lady said she could do it straight away & took all the details from my tax over the last 4 years. She seemed v£530ery efficient & said it was all sorted. To my surprise I received 4 new calculations from 2017/18 to 2020/21 saying I owed a total of £530.80 over the 4 years. On the back of each sheet it says less other tax allowance due, £230 £238 £250 twice. Have they taken it off instead of adding it.

It looks like you now owe £988 less than you owed before your wife applied.

What is your current tax code (before she applied)?

When HMRC have reviewed your tax affairs for those years it has brought out underpaid tax each year. 

They have deducted the marriage allowance from these underpayments leaving a balance due.

Have you checked the calculations to ensure the information on them is correct?

Is the income figure correct?

Have all the appropriate allowances been given?

Do the allowances given agree with your code numbers for each year?
