Claiming tax for working from home during covid.

I'm a volunteer for a charity, can i claim tax back for working from home (from my pension payments as I'm retired). I have no direct income from the charity but did greatly increase my hours for them as a result of the lockdowns from 16hrs per week to over 40.

  • No, there is nothing you can claim from HMRC in relation to WFH.

If you are under 75 and want to make some money at HMRC's expense you could always do the pension trick of turning £2,880 into £3,600.

£2,700 of which is taxable and £900 tax exempt.

End result is you are £180 better off.

Takes more effort than claiming for WFH but also gives a better reward.

  • The claim must be related to the employment and, you paid no tax at that employment, no claim is appropriate.
