Exchange rates, please advice!

I am looking to transfer money from the uk to another EU country. If I use my Nationwide VISA card I get a very good exchange rate, but I can only take out small amounts at a time. I have tried using HIFX but the exchange rate is worse than taking out cash with the NW VISA card. I need to send large amounts, would I get a better rate using Nationwide for a large transfer than a company like HIFX? would it be the same rate as when I use the VISA card? Anyone tried doing this? HIFX give me rates that are around 1% lower than the mid interbank rate! I would love a better rate if possible.
