    Hello forum people,

MSE's article on pension top-ups is focussed on plugging gaps in the history. I didn't spot advice on paying in advance.

For example, if someone knew they would be leaving the UK and then living/working out of the UK for the next ten years, could they pay national insurance in advance to ensure they got the full state pension allowance?

    Just curious.

I have been paying Class 3 NI contributions on a monthly basis for a few years in order to get the maximum ‘flat rate’ state pension.

A relative recently moved to another country and is therefore eligible to pay Class 2 NI, which is a much cheaper way of topping up 😉.

To be eligible to pay Class 2 contributions while living abroad you must be employed or self employed.
