Successful lower of council tax band

After reading MSE challenge your Council Tax banding I decided to check mine. All similar properties in my Lane were in band D whereby I was in Band E. After doing the checks MSE advised I was sure I had a good case. I submitted a copy of my Land Registry showing my bungalow and three similar and After about 4 weeks received a notice from Boston Borough Council saying I was now Band D and can expect a refund of £828.08 plus mot pay my final installment this tax year (which is £191). Not only will I be £30 a month better off but I will now qualify for Council Tax rebate of £150 against the enormous increase in energy.

Thanks Martin and MSE...I am glad I took the time to check!

I suggest anyone who buys a newbuild home should contest the councils banding. Speaking from experience twice over.

  • I have just been successful in lowering my home from a band C to a B with the encouragement and advice from this site, without it I wouldn't have a clue where to start. I have owned the property for nearly 4 years, I have just received a £700 refund and I have no Council Tax to pay for 25/26 tax year, worth over £2000 to me. The Valuation office wanted me to jump through many hoops, hoops which were on fire, it did take me many months to do a lot of research but that was because I live in a very rural area and my property (along with 6 others in our terrace) are  quite unusual in terms of age and location etc, I left no stone unturned.  I had to look back into house prices sold locally within a 10 mile radius and I checked sqM and what the current band was, it was difficult as a lot of properties similar to mine are holiday lets so the banding is not available on Gov.co.uk. I would urge anyone to read Martins advice and do those two tests, it is worth the time and effort and it is fair and just. My neighbours now, I hope, will also benefit and 1 has lived his  property for 20 years. I am a very popular neighbour just now :-)  and they are happy I have a terrier with a rabbit attitude, thank you Martin you are an absolute legend.
