Marriage Tax allowance Question

Few years ago my husband only works partime and he transferred some of his allowance to mine through Marriage Tax allowance. He now works full time and earns more than me for a year and a half now and when I checked our tax code, a letter N at the end of our tax code is still showing which apparently means the transferred allowance is still ongoing.
My question is, is it worth keeping it that way or are we losing money because of this and shall we cancel the marriage tax allowance since he is not a non-tax payer anymore.

Your help will be much appreciated.

  • Presumably his code is an N code while yours is an M code?

If you continue to receive the transfer and he continues to make that same transfer it will make no difference to the total cumulative tax that you both pay.

What are the tax codes on operation for each of you?

So there are some additional allowances in each of your tax codes (otherwise they would be 1131N and 1382M (perhaps fixed rate expenses). My original point stands as in the cumulative tax remains the same.

You may wish to change it now to take effect in the new tax year in which case your husband needs to withdraw the transfer.

Yes it's additional expenses, uniforms and working from home tax rebate I think. If we dont lose any money by keeping it this way (as you confirmed) then I won't bother.
Thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated :)

  • As long as you would be paying at least £252 in tax without the Marriage Allowance then you won't be losing out

If your tax (without Marriage Allowance) were to drop below that then you wouldn't be getting the full benefit and would be better reverting to the standard Personal Allowance each.
