1921 Census

The government has sold living peoples personal data to FINDMYPAST.CO.UK
This is the first national census data that has not been freely available to anyone interested - without having to visit National Archives
Instead - you have to pay between £2.50 and £3.50 per page/document to "find my past" and for anyone who has carried out any family reseach - you tend to get through a lot of pages.......

I know some are available free on Family Search.I have been an Ancestry member for 8 years and all of the previous census have been free to all !This is the first time that they have restricted viewing of a census0 -
This is not true - I think the 1881 census is available on Ancestry for free without having to have a current paid-for Ancestry membership but when I let my paid membership lapse last year, I could no longer view any of the other UK censuses. It is annoying that it has gone to Find My Past and that they are only offering pay per view but I think the price point is fairly reasonable, considering the work that will have gone into digitising and transcribing the census. A PDF of a birth, marriage / death certificate from GRO is twice the price.MFW since March 2019Mortgage-free 30th June 2023

The 1881 census was transcribed by volunteers (I think for Familysearch, ie the mormon church) which is why they can't charge for it. I remember the days when you had to travel to london to look at census on microfilm in the Public record office, it was free to view but travel costs for those outside London were high and if you found a couple of ancestral families in a full day you were doing well. I seem to remember the 1911 census was also pay per view but later on went available for members. I don't think these companies would digitise anything if there wasn't a profit in it for them.
