Moisturiser for the 40s

I'm in my early 40s, and up until a couple of years ago could pass as being under 30! I'm very active so also have quite a sporty physique. The parent that goes trampolining or rock climbing with her kids rather than sitting at the side drinking coffee and eating cake type of person!

But I hit 42 and something happened. My skin is starting to lose its elasticity and I can see jowl lines appearing on my face! Argh! I'm not particularly vain but also not liking this somewhat saggy skin feeling!

Ok, I might be over-exaggerating a little, but my skin has definitely changed, so I'm looking for recommendations for a decent moisturiser, as I've only ever bought whatever is half-price in Boots or Tesco!

I got the M&S beauty advent calendar this year and it contained "Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream" from RENskincare. It's £40 for 50ml so wondering if anyone has used this before and if it is better than just bog standard £8 ones?

I'm not poor, but also refuse to spend money on things that are no better than the cheaper alternative.

Any tips or recommendations?

Why not start with looking at Lacura from Aldi, or Cien from Lidl? They both do a small but good value , excellent quality skincare range with excellent reviews & results.

I am using Cien day cream with spf and a Nivea night cream for mature skin (I'm almost 58) and my skin is quite happy 🙂

Skincare is much more than just a good cream. You should look into having a simple routine of cleanse, tone and moisturize.
You don't have to spend a fortune but there isn't much point in spending a lot of money on a face cream if you don't cleanse, serum and tone.

I'd suggest Caroline Hirons blog as a starting point. She is ace.

    Thank you both!

I'll have a read through the blog and might have to start making more of an effort to actually look after my skin! That looks complicated!

I had a similar issue but a bit later in life what really helped was a slightly different approach, I tried own brand hair skin and nails supplements which made a huge difference based on this I invested in a good quality (but disgusting) collagen supplement that made even more of a difference, for other skin issues as I have aged I have injectables in a subtle way, these are far more effective then any cream could ever be, my day to day skincare routine has been trial and error but works well for me and is quite inexpensive, its consistency that counts but any topical treatment can only ever do so much, btw I'm a former beauty editor.

@serena9 thank you for this info! My eyes have been opened to the world of skin care!

I'm actually quite tempted by the injectables as I have just discovered a friend has botox injections in her forehead to get rid of the frown lines!!

Which collagen supplement do you use? I had a look this one got quite a few mentions, but the reviews seem to comment more on how it doesn't taste too vile (!) rather than how good it is!

The initial good results I had were with the Boots own brand skin hair and nails capsules, I've also heard good things about similar from Asda, much encouraged I moved on to a powder from amazon called Wellguard, I'm not great with odd-tasting stuff but my other half takes it too and has no problem but I just hate it so have gone back to tablets but a higher dose one ans so far so good.

I have fillers as and when, be aware they often last much longer than expected, and Botox every six months or so, I chose my practitioner because of her natural is best approach and her up to date knowledge  I tend to replace what has changed or been lost over time rather than try to change what I was born with or without, I started to have injectables at around 44, now 53 and my treatments have changed and adjusted over time but I am still with the same person, I'm happy to answer any other questions as best I can, its such huge learning curve, I'll put my current skincare routine below just so you can have a look  :)

Disclaimer - This is what works for me - some of it is unorthodox - I get it, but its a fab routine that has been developed out of many hours of research, I am fortunate enough to have access to all price points and levels of skincare and these are the ones I like because they simply work.

    AM
Cleanse - Boots Squalene cleanser used gently with warm water and a good old fashioned face cloth
If I am wearing make up that day I will not use a face cloth but gently use St Ives face scrub (deeply unpopular at the moment but works for me )
Treatment - The inky list - Omega Water
Moisturiser - Boots after sun - reduces redness, reduces sensitivity, deeply moisturises, non greasy.outstanding under make up

    PM
The Inky List Oatmeal Cleanser for a first Cleanse and to remove makeup used with warm water and a face cloth
Boots Squalene Cleanser as a second cleanser
    The Inky List Omega Water
    Boots After sun
    Revolution Skincare Gold Elixir

This is amazing, thank you so much @serena9

I'm 42 and it's about time I took a little more pride and care of my face as currently I just manage a generic facewash in the shower then moisturiser (whatever is on offer in Tesco!).

My friends tell me I look nothing like 42, and I think I have been quite lucky with genetics, but I am just starting to become quite conscious that my skin is starting to loose it's youthfulness and action is needed!

I always go back to these.  No7 perform & protect advanced serum & Clinique dramatically different lotion for the day & Elemis pro collagen marine cream for the night time.
For an evening I double cleanse, I use either a balm or oil first (Clinique take the day off, Elemis balm, Pixi double cleanse) followed by a cream - usually Liz Earle cleanse & polish.  In the morning I use something foaming in the shower, I like Estée Lauder foaming cleanser.
For a toner I like nip & fab pads, or Pixi glow tonic or if I fancy something gentle Liz Earle tonic water.
I use face masks too, my favourite being the sand & sky pink sands one.
    No7 do a lovely exfoliater.

Being 70 this year  :D I have become a bit obsessed with skincare.  I buy a lot from QVC. They have lots of good bargains and if you don’t like it you can send it back no matter how much of it you’ve used.

One brand I find very good for “older” skins is Prai.

Also, I would add my skin hates fragrance and actives but my friends' and daughters' skins do not so here are some other brands that I would recommend but do not use

Eucerin anti aging - I used to use this its excellent
Dermatica - this is a retinol prescription service I tried the results were outstanding but my skin sadly was too reactive to it no matter what I did
    Kiehls
    Ren
    Neutrogena Hydra Boost
    Laniege Cream Skin Toner
    Curel (not the western version)
Hada Labo (not the western version)
Cerave - not worth the hype imo but still good

I would also second spending some time hanging around QVC beauty, you will learn loads, don't fall for the hype but if you do you can easily return, it's seriously slept on and has lots of innovative brands.
