paying back credit after splitting from a partner

My son and his partner have been living together under joint tenancy for nearly 2 years. His partner could not get credit so my son got furniture and other household items in his name. His partner now wants them to go their separate ways. Will my son have to pay this on his own or does his partner have to pay half
