Delay Repay Question

Hi,
This is actually two questions about two separate journeys, the outward leg and the return leg.
On Friday, three of us (2 adults 1 child), bought a return ticket from Manchester to Newark and took a route with one change, planning to change at Leeds.
When we got to Leeds, at 6.15pm, all trains to Newark were cancelled. Also, all trains back to Manchester were cancelled. We thought we were stranded, enquired about a hotel/taxi but were denied (someone said, with a really crappy tone of voice to me, "We advised everyone not to travel, so its your own fault". This was the day of Storm Eunice. I'd argue they shouldn't run the trains at all if they think people shouldn't be travelling, but thats not the reason for this post).
In the end, my friend in Newark told us to get to Doncaster, and he would pick us up from there. We were able to use the same ticket because changing at Doncaster was another valid route to Newark. It was still some distance from Newark (Newark - Doncaster is a 45min drive).
Where do we stand with delay repay with this journey? Can we claim for this, given we couldn't complete the journey? Or would they say it was our own fault for travelling during the storm? On the Transpennine express website, there is an option for "I abandoned my journey" but I think this is for people who didn't start the journey, whereas we did.
Question regarding the return journey on Sunday, Newark to Manchester:
First train from Newark was cancelled, but we got the next train, 15mins later, to Leeds. This was LNER. And this train was on time.
At Leeds, we boarded a train to Manchester. This was with Transpennine Express. This train was a nightmare to be on, very stressful (there was a broken down train in front of us), we ended up arriving 57 minutes late. There were announcements from the driver saying "Sorry about the delay, you will be able to claim compensation with delay repay".
So I know I can claim for the return leg, but I can't figure out who I should be claiming through? Would this be through LNER since we started the journey with them, or TPX who caused the delay?
Thanks in advance.

A journey can be abandoned at any point between start and finish point. As you didn't get to your destination you abandoned mid journey and are entitled to a refund from the retailer of the ticket.
With the return you claim from TPE as they were the operator causing the delay.
