Tooth extraction abscess

God I’m in pain. A week ago I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed under ga as it was ridiculously far down in my jaw. It was taken out in 4 pieces and surgeon told me to expect a lot of pain.

I was handling it well until the weekend when it got so much worse that I thought I had dry socket. This morning I woke up sweating and shivering.
I used a cotton bud to clean the wound, which I can’t see as it’s right up tight behind my back molar, and a gush of pus came out. 🤢

I’ve had to use a private online gp for antibiotics which are coming tomo. But does anyone have any advice on what else to do to look after it?
I’m seeing my surgeon Friday and couldn’t get hold of him today.

What was the aftercare guidance you were given, in the event of any problems following treatment?

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I was told to use warm salt rinses once past the 24hr mark. No sloshing around though.
To call the ward if I had any problems. They advised that o needed to see the surgeon or go in for a nurse to review.

I’m a 2 hour drive each way from the hospital and don’t drive. Hubby was helping last week but can’t now due to work.

We only travelled that far to be able to get surgery quicker as consultant could see how bad it was before the op.

I’ve heard back from the secretary and they are trying to sort out a consultation space for me tomorrow.

I would have suggested getting to the surgeon sooner, or trying to see your own regular dentist asap.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I’ve seen the surgeon. I have infection in the surgical site and a cheek abscess. Both could be the same thing but put on antibiotics with prescription for a second course to follow. Have an appt to see him Thursday but only have to go if I need it with a definite follow up the following week.

    That's good!

Was a bit worried with the sweating & shivering symptoms - but it was reassuring some pus actually came out of the site. That's a good sign that it drained.

Glad you got it looked at.

  • Thank you toothsmith. I’ll be so glad to get this all out the way. Was due my stage 2 root canal Friday which has been booked since December.
there’s no way I can handle that so rescheduled after the receptionist told me it was highly inadvisable.
They ever so kindly gave me their quickest next appt…. April 29th!! It beggars belief 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes - that wouldn't be good with what's going on at the moment!
