in Cutting tax
My son aged 18 has started work at Sainsburys earning £7904 per annum. He has had two payslips so far, the first one had a tax code 0T and he was taxed £121.60, in the second month his tax code shows as 182T and he was taxed £94.40.
I can’t find any explanation on the Hmrc site as to what 182T means as a tax code. Is this something that will be sorted out automatically perhaps at the end of the tax year or should he contact Hmrc as I’m not sure he should be paying tax at all on that wage. Grateful for any advice.

182T is equivalent to a personal allowance of 1829 and is generally appropriate to a second job or source of income, with the remainder of the allowances used at a main source, on an L code. If this is his only source of income he needs to inform HMRC. What did he put on his starter form?0

He should check his Personal Tax Account on gov.uk to see what other employments HMRC have details of.
Has he had another job earlier in this tax year?
An initial tax code of 0T means either he didn't comply with the new starter declaration process or Sainsbury's didn't act on information he provided them with.
The 182T tax code is HMRC correcting that although it may well be further adjustment is necessary.0 -
Thanks both no other income since a small paid job at a school between Selt and March 2020. He gave his p60 to sainsbury perhaps will check that was correct or as you say sainsburys have made a mistake somewhere

It's too late for this job but he would never need to hand a new employer a P60.
It's a P45 or new starter declaration.
To sort this now he needs to contact HMRC.
But it would be sensible for him to check his Personal Tax Account first and then if there is another job recorded he can explain what happened with that and get a new tax code sorted.
Sainsbury's, not HMRC, will refund any excess tax deducted the first time they operate the new tax code.0 -

For future reference it is usually a very bad idea to give a new employer an out of date P45, they have a nasty habit of not realising it refers to a previous tax year.
