Homemaker's income?

On a credit card application, when asked for annual income and monthly take-home, can a homemaker with no job put down child benefits, SMP, or any allowance they may get from their spouse's income?

Is a joint account required to include the last option?

Or does anyone know which banks ask for household income instead?

  • Yes, you can put down any money you receive. There's no need for a joint account.

Read the small print of whichever card you're applying for as some cards accept some benefits and not others.

I think Tesco asked for household income, from cards that I have applied for recently. Also Barclaycard, but I applied for that one many years ago.

If you don't need a card to build personal credit history, then it might be easiest to get your partner to open an account with you as a secondary card holder. I realise there's sometimes reasons people may not want to do this, but it might be right your situation.

There is no such thing as a joint account for credit cards... legally nothing to stop it but they just arent offered. You just get single name accounts which you can add secondary cardholders to but they arent additional account holders. AmEx comes closest as secondary cardholders do get their own web log in etc however they only see their own spend etc whereas the account holder sees spend across all the cards.

Most lenders will allow you to declare certain benefits as income... I think pocket money given by your spouse wouldnt be allowed by most because there is no contractual basis for this to continue.

Some lenders do ask about household income in addition to personal income though what weighting is placed on this is unknown to anyone outside of the lender.
