That’s the problem. Each week that you earn more than £84 you will pay tax at 20%. If you can get off the W1 before the end of the tax year any excess tax will be refunded by your employer. Otherwise you must await HMRC to review the whole tax year when they get around to it.
  • C439LX is the code....at my current rate I will be at that level, but hopefully a refund is likely..

The ‘X’ indicates that each pay period will be calculated on its own without reference to earlier periods. No refund will ensue while it remains in your code number.

If you genuinely have no other taxable income outside of the SP and this work it is likely best that you contact HMRC and get the X removed, they do have a habit of adding X for no apparent reason when a new income stream comes on.

You will need to give details of your earnings and State Pension for anyone to know.

It may well be correct but maybe not.

Remember State Pension is paid weekly or 4 weekly not monthly.

Has your wife applied for Marriage Allowance.
Don't forget the last point re marriage allowance if you are married or in a civil partnership and your spouse is not using all their personal allowance.
  • Well....eventually got through to HMRC, and two minutes later my tax code had been revised and a promise of a £380 rebate.....
