A Film about consumerism EVERYBODY should see!

I hope its OK to put this on this board, it's not my own website, a friend of mine sent it to me by email. Also, please don't treat it as SPAM - its not meant to be!

The cartoon and live action film is done in such an easy style, even children could watch.

The link is: http://www.storyofstuff.com/index.html

PLEASE watch it yourself and pass it on to everybody you know! Thank you.

There are also some positive actions to do about the issues raised in the film on the website.
(I know its not STRICTLY moneysaving, but NOT consuming so much is!;) )

  • It is worth watching. Thanks.
  • Personally I thought it was one sided tosh.

It went on about us pouring toxins into the air, but didn't mention we will live far longer than our predecessors.

It also didn't mention that the toxins were in such small amounts that they are not worth bothering about, unless you get paid to tell people about them.

It didn't mention that most smokers do not die of a smoking relate illness.

It went on about us cutting down tree but did not mention that whatever killed the dinosaurs also killed 99% of all living plants and animals. Not did it mention that the last BIG ice age killed most living things.

If it did it would have to also mention that we survived both! Well maybe not me, or man, but life on earth did, and it recovered.

It mentioned that mothers who breast feed were feeding their kids toxins, but failed to mention that those kids live longer.

It mentioned toxins a lot, but failed to mention that toxins are only toxic in large enough quantities. Most toxins are beneficial in smaller quantities, but it failed to mention quantities.

It seems to me that there are a lot of people in this world making money from scaring people.

I've watched it - and thought it put things very clearly and in about the right length of time. Pretty good in my opinion.
  • Pretty good in my opinion too.
  • I thought it was a brilliant film. Geordie Joe, maybe it's you that was watching with more bias than she was presenting with? I mean, for example, you didn't mention that she clearly said that breast is still best.
  • What a load of old twaddle, Sorry but I really can't take her seriously while she's using Electricity to make a film about using too much Electricity (among other things).

I found it very informative and easy to understand. I can now teach my son all about it in an easy way. This film is ahead of its time. Give us 5-10 years and we will all be saying how great these people are in getting the message out. People who first said that smoking & passive smoking is deadly/bad for you, had most people say how over exaggerating & wrong they were...this is the same here.

  • I feel really depressed after watching this... can't believe how many threads there are now on Moneysaving expert that are all basically about opting out of modern day life in the western world... not surprising really.

Geordie Joe is correct to point out that the programme was sensationalist about toxins. If this is true, then there will be some interesting lawsuits in the US! There are some genuine environmental concerns though, so it's important to stick to the ones that matter most. However, the general thrust about the dubious value of unrestricted consumerism and exploitation of the third world is certainly a valid one.

    This cartoon says it all
