Being a self employed Mortgage Broker

I'm currently working as an self employed IT Consultant, and have always done my own tax returns, etc and have done a fair amount of reading in general about our tax system, and also mortgage applications through my own personal experiences. I've always felt I've understood financial services rather easily and it started me thinking about being a mortgage broker.

I understand the CeMAP level 3 qualifications needed, but wondered what the possibilites are when qualified of being a self employed mortgage broker? I understand you can register with a 'Mortgage Network'. Does this enable you to do this? Or would I have to be employed somewhere for a period at least initially.

Has anyone done the same or similar?
