  • Our Corn Flour is decanted into a tub. I’ve forgotten when it due date is! In face it makes gravy and sauces, doing so for 35 years, so I think it’s good!

We get through a couple of boxes a year and never look at the sell-by date. This is our preferred method for making gravy.

    1. Take a Pyrex jug if you have a microwave or saucepan if using a hob.

    2. Add about a tablespoon of cornflour, a teaspoon of veg stock, of a few shakes of back pepper and a quick splash of soy sauce for colour.

    3. Add a little water, just enough to make a thin paste, and mix it all together

    4. Then stir in liquid to make the quantity required: plain water is fine but we use the water that we've just used to boil greens, and some meat juice if we've previously roasted a beef joint (allowing that to cool and removing the solid fat first).

The most interesting gravy uses the water that purple sprouting broccoli has been boiled in!

If you have children of school age, they may be interested in a bit of "non-Newtonian fluid" science. Like John Tickle who walked across a swimming pool filled with corn flour and water... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-18800017

I made these with cornflour instead of flour for a gluten free experiment. They were exactly the same as flour ones, easy to make and look just like the photo. You won't regret making double the quantity and may need to buy some more cornflour for the next batch.
