Can you not pick up a bit of agency work in the meantime for 6 months or so and then use that job as a last reference when you apply for a more permanent post.  Alternatively, how about contacting your previous Manager to see if they have any vacancies and get back into work that way

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time

Old job is gone and it was a bit of a trek (30 miles each way) which is why I took this new job in private sector which was around 3 miles from my home. I don't want to travel that kind of a distance anymore so would only consider a job close to home.

Agency work: Never done this before, just been employed for 30 years for various councils. I would have thought that they too would require references or does anybody know if they are more "flexible" in regards to references?

You  might not want "to travel that kind of a distance anymore" but it'll get you out of a hole.

If you’re working in social care, I’d be very surprised if they only gave basic references.

I've worked in private social care for over 20 years. During that time I've known several people leave the comfort of Local Authority jobs.

The promise of better pay and progression tempted them.

In all cases they were back at the LA within 3 years (shortest was 4 months). One in particular was a senior manager heading his social work department (Learning Dis) , he had to rejoin as a s/w taking instruction from someone far junior originally who filled his void. Credit to him he stuck that for 5 years before getting another senior role with a neighboring LA.

The private sector is not for everyone, especially those who have spent a significant time working for a council.
