Is the State Pension a Benifit?

  • I'm 66 in the summer and will no longer receive CA for looking after mum. Does this mean I won't care for her anymore? Of course not but some days it's tempting to put her in a care home. That would cost the State far more than the approx £50, after tax, they pay me to care for her 24/7

Carer's allowance isn't supposed to be payment for a job, it's supposed to be some sort of (fairly minor) compensation for reducing your earning capacity. If you have a paid job earning more than £128 pw you wouldn't be able to claim CA either.

Unless you have complicated tax affairs you really shouldn't be paying tax if you are in receipt of Carers Allowance.

I gave up work to take care of my husband until he died. Didn't claim anything then as we didn't know to.

After he died I receive his work pension which just takes me into paying tax. I was looking into returning to work when it became clear that mum was struggling and was soon diagnosed with dementia.

Her doctor told me to claim NI credits to keep my pension years up to date. After a couple of years mum received AA and the DWP? wrote to me to tell me I should claim CA. I checked with them and it's not counted as income from paid work when claiming. I hope that's right.

    If you get State Pension

You cannot get the full amount of both Carer’s Allowance and your State Pension at the same time.

If your pension is £67.60 a week or more, you will not get a Carer’s Allowance payment.

If your pension is less than £67.60 a week, you’ll get a Carer’s Allowance payment to make up the difference.
