Carpet moths! Remedy?

Options
Hello folks. We've had some trouble with these over the years that we've had our current living room carpet. We've now ordered a new one for delivery and fitting in the next couple of weeks... and if possible I want to do something effective during the couple of days before it arrives when the old one will be gone and the floor bare.

Does anyone know of any commercially available, anti-moth stuff I can use to back up the thorough clean I'll be doing at that time? Ideally, something they've used themselves and can vouch for. Grateful for any advice/info.

Is your new carpet wool or artificial fibres?

There will be a proportion of wool. I realise the risk. It's why I've posted the query.

I would get the old carpet out now if possible, then vacuum several times a day until your new one is fitted.

This is what we used when we had carpet beetle; don't know if it would be any good for your problem:

I would agree, chemicals attacks are probable not the best option at the moment. There are several species of clothes moth and carpet beetles that will happily munch on you natural fibre in clothes or carpets. You are removing the food source and home for any eggs or larvae currently causing damage, but I would also consider laundering / dry cleaning anything in your wardrobes that can be hiding a population that could move on to your new carpet.

There are several species of clothes moths and carpet beetles. In the wild their larvae feed on the skins and fur of dead animals and in birds nests lined with animal hair. The adults feed on nectar and pollen ( I have found several variable carpet beetles in my garden feeding on flower heads) so as well is accidentally getting in they can be introduced on cut flowers.

Whether you get further infections is going to be a matter of pot luck, but if you are careful you can reduce the risk.

Pheromone traps are useful, they only catch males but they do serve of an advance warning that you have a problem.

I forgot to say, don’t go round removing natural predators especially spiders.

  • You have my sympathies.  We tried all sorts to get rid of the damn things.  Eventually we settled for wood flooring.

  • Just had the same problem in one isolated area of one room. Have just spent the last two days using these

There's a powder, spray and then finally a 'smoke bomb'. Obviously not sure how effective they will be!
