You mean the look of confusion in their eyes when after they totalled up and it is for example 7.37 and you say i'll give you the odd 37p as well as the £10! My Saturday job in the late 70s / early 80s i was taught to count out the change into the customers hand now days you are just giving a handful of change dumped in your hand

They weren't that young. I would have said about 30.8 -

I am certain I couldnt do it now. Holding 2 numbers in my head is challenge enough.6 -
I still do a rough tally of how much my shopping costs as I'm going around the store after seeing someone have to put some of their shopping back because she didn't have enough to pay. The poor lady was mortified but was too proud to let me give her the difference. This happened when I was in my early twenties, but it has stuck with me ever since.

Oh I'm very behind on the thread. Just catching up now. Had a busy couple of weeks, as had the week off for DD's half term (she's still off this week as well), and back to work this week with 2 team members now on holiday and another just tested positive for covid
Glad some of you have had your various jabs. We're not eligible for the covid ones, but we've just had that anyway, and we've all had our flu ones. My parents and in laws are also now fully jabbed up for both covid and flu, which is a relief.
When I was ill, I ordered groceries etc in, which proved rather more expensive than I would have liked. So I have been decluttering hard, and listing things on ebay to recoup some funds. That has proven helpful. And cleared some room. DD was so, so good at going through all her toys with me and we made a pile for car boot, pile for selling online and pile for charity shop (with a few bits going in the bin). No whinging or complaining from her, which is great. She's used to it by now haha. Indoor car boot is this Sunday, so fingers crossed for a good day there.
Oh, and don't be fooled by small figures that children may play with not having any resale value. DD had a number of hatchimals, I sorted them into various categories and sold a set of 11 'twins' for £10, plus postage on ebay this last week. So, you know, always good to check.
I made DD's halloween costume. A Wednesday Addams dress, in the new style. And I've also repaired some shorts of hers (re hemmed one pair and fixed some small holes in others).
In decluttering mission, I went through a box of DH's old paperwork that was in the garage. He had things in there from 1997!!! lol Big pile of shredding to do!
So sorry to hear about all of the awful weather so many of you have/are experiencing. I hope your homes have all stayed dry!February wins: Theatre tickets9 -

Working in a small local village supermarket in the late 70s early 80s it wasn't unusual as majority of people still paid in cash and it was all manual tills so a slow process to take stuff off. There was always one lady in her 60s who came in late on a Saturday afternoon just before closing (those days 5.30pm) and 9 out of 10 weeks would be short of money at the till, my manager would say bring it in Monday, after all we all it was a village so we all knew where she livedi never admitted she was a distance cousin of my mums
I think these days people are too embarrassed to ask to put stuff back and if paying by card will just keep quiet at least paying by cash means if you don't have the money something you don't have the choiceLife shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin8 -
Last Sunday OH had to go to hospital in the city near us for a minor out-patient op. As they were running over an hour late we had just enough time afterwards to nip into L**l 10 minutes before they closed.
I grabbed (amongst other things) one of their XL packs of belly pork with a 60% off sticker. After going through the till and checking my receipt, I noticed that they had failed to take off the 60% and also the 75p discount on one of the two identical packs of grated parmesan. The girl on the till fiddled around a bit and then said she'd have to get the manager - who was nowhere to be found! Long story short - she said it was too late in the day for her brain to work it out and refunded the full price for both the pork and the cheese!
Winner, winner - free dinner(s) and almost £10 back in my housekeeping. Result!!"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718
