Also made a batch of fairy cakes with glace cherries for DGS. I buy decent cherries from our local baking shop so have green, yellow and red ones in there.

Excellent well done Wicked_Lady, its all trial and error sometimes. I thinkif you have the time, and the oven is on anyway, why not knock up a few cakes for the cake tin.
Great for children to have as a snack after school, instead of a packet of crisps which I believe are getting more and more expensive.

When my children were small they used to get far too many easter eggs. We used to make fairy cakes and melt the eggs to use as a topping and the sweets which were often smarties, would be used to decorate. Still makes me smile when I think about the fun we had.
I cook some meals for my parents and inlaws freezer, mostly casseroles, cottage pies and their favourite steak pie. The difference in price now is really telling. It was cheaper today to buy a roasting beef joint per kilo than it was to buy cubed casserole beef. I dont think many people can afford to pay for convenience anymore.6 -
I need to express my shock somewhere and sorry if this is the wrong place, but My food bill has trebled and its unsustainable, I just spent £113 for two people. No meat or fruit, just basics like frozen fish veg, pasta, cheese salad veg, bread and toilet roll. It’s insane. I’ve been watching it creep up and up. Every week it seems to cost more. Do they expect prices to rise even more. Because we are going to have to start skipping meals.9

How long was that shop for? A week or a month? And where do you currently shop? Do you buy branded items etc? I ask because for a week, for my family of 3, I spend considerably less than that, even with toiletries and household items included. So if it is for a week, you can definitely get that price down.February wins: Theatre tickets7 -
@London_1
Thank you Jackie. This will help fill lunchboxes for DD, for a 'sweet treat' in it. I will report back when I make them.
School cookery lessons in the 70s/80s, teacher used to say to put granulated sugar in a tied plastic bag and run a rolling pin over it for a few mins if someone didn't have caster sugar. I'm sure a blender would give better results but thought I'd mention it just in case someone doesn't own one.
Yesterday's meals were pretty much up eat what was left from Sunday the one rasher of bacon went into a sandwich, soup and leftover curry was eaten. Oven wasn't turned on once.9
