  • Why would anyone throw out letters addressed to them without even opening them?

Do people actually just throw away letters without even spending 30 seconds openeing it and seeing what it is?
  • I wouldn't chuck it away but they do like to send you letters fairly often trying to push balance transfer deals etc, people probably just assume but TBH I doubt anyone is actually doing this, just MSE being helpful

Yes they might throw a letter away without opening if they haven't been a Barclay customer for many years. Or even at all.

Last year I received a letter and cheque refund from HSBC - I've never banked with them. So I phoned them and discovered it was a refund from the John Lewis credit card I'd held several years ago. HSBC had taken over JL financial services so then it all made sense. I have to say that the letter did look like much of the junk mail I receive.

I banked the cheque and all was fine. But I think people today are far more suspicious than they ever were before and think they may be tricked, or do something that triggers some kind of scam. It's not difficult to understand why people fear scams when there are so many different and very clever ones occurring all the time.

If I do ever receive another such cheque, I'll just bank it. The HSBC one was such a lovely and unexpected surprise. Of course I did then have to apply to have the tax refunded as my income is so low, even with that refund, that it shouldn't have been deducted in the first place.

If you havn't been a customer for a while or never at all then that's even more reason to open it and find out why they are writing to you because something must have triggered them contacitng you now and it could even be someone opening an account in your name.

Even junk mail (which i hardly ever receive) i open and look at to see who has my details and what it's about.

I really can't think of any reason to not open a letter adressed to you and in a lot of cases it can cause you problems by missing something you need to know.

  • Barclays sent me a letter, i filled in the online form and gave the information required. It is now 40 days later and nothing. Their recorded message says it should be paid within 40 days. They also stated that there is an hour wait on the phone to speak to someone. Will they be paying me the interest rates they were charging on my barclaycard too if/when they do get round to paying the money they have written to say they owe me? Are many other people waiting so long? Why don’t they change their message to say 50 days if they can’t keep up with the 40 day payment?

No. Your redress will have statutory interest applied.
  • Well I’m afraid I was one of those people who threw away the unopened letter as I was no longer a customer and thought it was just one of those letters looking me to use the card again….have received a letter saying I received a cheque and it hasn’t been cashed, have been ringing forever and can’t get through, at this rate the cheque will have expired already🙈 any advice🙏🏼

Ask them to issue a new cheque, they can see the original won't have been cashed and will cancel it

Exactly! Even though I do most things electronically. And now I'm waiting with bated breath to see if they will send me a lovely letter. . .  and I open all my mail, always, junk included.    :)

Eek! My stepmum has only just told me she was a Barclaycard customer. She has a letter dated 22 April 2022 stating that she should have received a cheque in November 2021. She was away from October to January and while her son did put her post in a pile for her, it appears she must have missed the important refund cheque.

I've tried calling Barclaycard (0800 634 3924) and even though I waited over 2 hours, I didn't get to speak to anyone. Tried for 2 days so far. Any tips on how I can resolve this for her? Thank you.
