Self Assessment online - where is equivalent of Box 19 ?

I can never find the box for reclaiming tax on my professional subs. I've let it go for the last 3 years, but I'm p***ed off with it now. Note, I am referring specifically to the online return. The 'Employment Expenses' section seems to refer entirely to P11D type stuff paid by my employer, but not my professional subs which I pay out of my own taxed income. I think from memory it used to be Box 19 (maybe still is) on the printed return, but the online form certainly hides it well.

  • What did answer when tailoring your return and you got to the question did you have you any employment related expenses (or similar)?
  • It’s actually within the employment section - do you wish to claim any expenses against this employment (or similar):

  • I dislike the way in which the paper form doesn't map onto the online form - it makes cross referencing in these sort of forums so difficult.
in section 4 of the online form, answer YES to “Do you wish to claim any employment expenses or capital allowances while working for xxxxxxxxxxx".
then the relative section pops up later. (which is what the above two posters are indicating)

I agree. However one of the most frequent questions on here centres on where to enter something on an online form. Unless I physically access a client return it is impossible to remember the phraseology. That is why I tend to provide a link to the paper version and use the phrase ‘or similar’.

I remember when self-assessment was first introduced and I was involved in the consultation group. Many of us wanted HMRC to provide a ‘dummy’ online return that taxpayers could ‘play’ with similar to the online calculators that we now have. They refused.
  • The irony is, that at the end the online form, it creates a copy of the paper form for you to save (as I do) - but the most important part of my yearly process is saving my notes on how I had to customise the online form in order to gain access to the relevant boxes on that online form next time!
Btw thank you for the expert insights. I’ve learnt a lot reading this forum from you & others over the years.

This screen ? I've tried this before. Clicking on 'Change taxable benefits and expenses only brings up stuff provided by my employer, which is where I came in....

You have ticked the box in tailoring your return ‘Did you receive any expenses?’ instead of  ‘ Do you wish to CLAIM any expenses?

    Subtle but important difference.
  • Here, perhaps? No mention of professional subscriptions, but I suppose it could fall under 'Such as'. But why the **** is it not a category in its own right?

No - go back to ‘Tailor your return’

In the employment section there is a question: Have you received any taxable benefits or expenses payments ….?
    You may have ticked this.

Instead choose - Do you wish to CLAIM any employment expenses….  ? Professional subscriptions are specifically mentioned here!
