What do I put down for how much I earn?

I work on commission so don't know how to put down on my forms how much I earn as one month it could be really high and one month really low. I get a basic wage but I could earn anything upwards of £340 a month commission.

Comments

  • I would go with your guaranteed basic wage. I'm sure the OR will arrange with you how to go about paying a percentage of your commission.

If I'm wrong, please correct me as this would be useful for me to know!

Current balance: approx £17500 including Tax Credit Overpayment

Estimated DFD: never - deficit budget. Cheers HMRC!

Another year over and we're still together. It's not always easy, but I'm here forever
  • Thanks i'm not even sure what my basic is after tax as I've never got nothing in commission I will try to figure it out!
  • If you google tax calculator you can find a calculator to work it out. You can even take student loans etc off it.

Yep. You need to make it clear that you receive both basic and commission components for you wage.

I've been told the best way is to work out your basic wage and average commission over the last 6 or 12 months and then make sure the two components are listed separately and totalled together so the OR can see what is what.

You can calculate the the basic minus it's tax here:

In addition make sure you make it's very clear on the forms what sort of variation in commission you get monthly/seasonally/etc. Probably best to explain that clearly in the extra info section (Q13).

In other words, give them as complete info as you can so they understand the variability in your income.

You should have a chance to explain it all in the interview if anything is unclear.

And that brings up the site I've had bookmarked for ages. I wondered where I found it. Must have googled.;):D
