Underpaid PAYE, when will I need to pay?

in Cutting tax
Hi,
Due to a litany of errors from HMRC and my 'employer' (an umbrella co) I reckon I owe HMRC about £4,200 in PAYE for 21/22. This arose because HMRC gave the employer a new tax code but it was applied on a non week zero basis, with zero cumulative income, resulting in me getting a £2k refund and my tax being wrong for about 6 weeks.
After repeated phone calls HMRC said this is too hard to fix?! And I should keep the money aside.
I intend to earn £99,999 this tax year to avoid having to do a tax return, but if I do one anyway will this mean that I don't have to pay the owed tax until January 2023?
I'm guessing if I don't do one I'll get a demand for payment in summer?
Thanks

Oh, if I did need to do a tax return, I'd submit it in April 2022; my affairs are not complicated, so would hopefully beat HMRC's recalculation.Pensions actuary, Runner, Dog parent, Homeowner0

For an amount that size you will probably be looking at 31 January 2023 whether you do a return or not.
Because it's more than £3,000 (the maximum HMRC collect via your tax code in this scenario) you would get a Simple Assessment calculation and have to pay that by 31 January 2023. Or 3 months later if it wasn't issued by the end of October 2022.1
