Can't register my property for electricity as no record of my house
Options
Hello
I would be so grateful for some help as I just don't know what else to do.
I moved into my new house in May 2021 and asked my Mortgage Lender to set up all of my bills/suppliers etc. After nearly 2 months, they contacted me to say that they hadn't been able to set anything up as my house wasn't registered. I am the only property in the street to not show up when searching via OFGEM.
When I moved in I was told by my solicitor that my electricity was through British Gas. I contacted them for help only to be told that it used to be with BG but when they checked further, the people in the property before me were actually paying electricity on a different property and not the one in question.
They advised to wait for a letter through the post from the Supplier then obviously I could contact them. In the meantime I tried through OFGEM on numerous occasions but every time I was advised that my property couldn't be found.
2 weeks ago a letter arrived from Scottish Power !! Great I thought, finally I can get something set up. Called them up only to be advised that they didn't supply to my house, No 23 but infact to No27 - I did point out that there wasn't a No27 in the road but they couldn't help any further.
Please help !! What can I do, where can I go next to get this sorted out ?? I am a single mum with 3 children and terrified that my electricity is just going to be disconnected, but I have absolutely no way to find out how I can pay. !!

You won't be disconnected but you might end up with a prepay meter.
If it was me I'd phone up SP and give my address as no. 27 and see what happens. If they let you set up an account then once you have it all set up you can check the meter number and then, and only then, write a complaint that they have the wrong address on the database. If you keep phoning up and giving them a non existent address you won't get anywhere.
If you fail with SP then try BG.
There are a few proviso's.
Double check there isn't another 23 and double check there isn't a 27.
You say your mortgage lender couldn't set up anything. This could be just the start of your problems. What address does royal mail think it is? What address does the land registry think it is?

You may have tried this already - but in case not:
Go to https://www.energynetworks.org/operating-the-networks/whos-my-network-operator - and there you should be able to find your "electricity network operator" or "Electricity Distribution Operator" by entering your postcode or clicking on the map.
When you click on them, e.g. if you are in Scotland it might be "Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks" it will take you to their web-site e.g. https://www.ssen.co.uk/Home/
On that web-site it should have somewhere you can click on to find your supplier, e.g. half-way down on the right of https://www.ssen.co.uk/Home/ it has a section "Who is my supplier?" - click on the "Find my supplier" button in there, and it will take you to https://www.ssen.co.uk/Whoisyoursupplier/ where you can enter your address or Meter Serial Number to find your supplier.
If you are in a different part of the UK it will be a different network/distribution operator web-site, but it should have a similar link.2 -
Is the home a new build and you're the first resident of the property? The builders might have had the gas and electric meters put in and used some energy whilst finishing off the property. I believe there is a site where you put your postcode in and it gives you your energy supplier I only found this site for gas, maybe they also supply the electric.Someone please tell me what money is2

I echo the advice above, from DM and XB, but will add an anecdote that may illustrate why you can't always take metering information at face value. When I was working as a meter reader I used to go to a house that had the gas and electric meters registered as being in different roads and with different postcodes. If it is a developer built property sometimes the developer's Plot Number gets put in as the house number. They are rarely the same.2

Ring SP and ask them to do a search using your meter serial number rather than your address. If they can’t do this on their system - which they should be able to - they can definitely do it on the national database. If they are not your supplier the database will say who is.1

ok great, thank you for the advice.
I think I will call SP and see if they can help any further, I will use the suggestion of No27 and also to search using the Meter serial number. Everything suggests SP are my supply albeit under a different address !! So frustrating.0 -

Hello
I am facing the same issue, after I bought the house, electricity can't be connected since the database number is not matching with actual. We have been following it up with SP but no response from them.
Please let me know how did Worthy73 sorted the issue0
