hi all i am approaching two years post discharge and wondered when i should be able to clean up my credit file. will all my creditors showing open accounts in default automatically drop off after the 5 years or will i need to request the removal? some of the free credit file sites are showing different resuts with some accounts showing and others not. on a positive note 3 years after bankruptcy i am living debt free and very grateful for the fresh start. my debts were over £26k over a lot of accounts thus lots of payments each month that messed me up. i now have full controll over my finances and a lesson learnt

Defaults will drop off immediately when they reach their end date, you mention five years so assume you are in Scotland? I think there is a sticky on the debt free wannabe forum but to be honest all the while your bankruptcy is listed I think its just a matter of keeping an eye on it."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

Hi,
There is a standard process for marking ex bankrupts credit files, all defaults should show a default date of no later than the date of your bankruptcy, if some show as earlier, then that`s fine.
All debts should be marked as either "settled" or "satisfied" and show a zero balance owing.
All defaults will vanish from your credit file six years after the date of your bankruptcy or date of default, whichever is the earlier.
Debts show on your credit file for a period of 6 years (England, Scotland & Wales) there is no difference to that statute, its six years across the board, no matter where you live, the other poster was mixing up the prescription and limitation act (Scotland) which governs limitation periods, with the time a debt shows on your credit file, they are two very different things.
If your debts are not marked as above, then make a complaint to the data controller of the creditor concerned, stating the relevant guidelines.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
