Do I need Wedding Insurance!?

Hi,

We are getting married in Lisbon in September 2022. We are about to book our wedding and are wondering how best to protect ourselves should the worst happen (company bankruptcy, covid etc.).

We need to put down a 50% deposit (£4000) on a hotel to reserve all the rooms. I am wondering if anything can be done to protect ourselves? I was planning to make some (at least £101) of the payment on a credit card however I'm unsure if this will offer the protection we would like..

I've read that there aren't any companies that offer wedding insurance aboard currently, so it would appear this is not an option..

Would it make a difference if the hotel was booked as accommodation for 30 guests instead of a wedding? thinking this could then be covered by travel insurance instead of specific wedding insurance...

Everything else (catering, photographer etc.) would be booked separately much closer to the wedding, so less concerned about that.

Hope this makes sense, any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks.

No need for £101. 1p will do it, if you're talking about s75 protection.

Remember that just gives you the same rights against the card provider as the merchant.

Paying by CC just means you can pursue your bank rather than the merchant which can be easier if the merchant is overseas or gone bust but it doesnt give you any additional rights.

Booking travel with a CC can make S75 claims difficult too because of the heavy use of agents in the travel industry which break the Debtor, Creditor, Supplier link that is required for S75. Not saying not to pay by CC but just dont assume its the perfect protection in isolation.

For example if you are sick and cannot travel then the hotel has no liability to you to refund if you bought non-refundable so nor would your credit card.

Make sure you know exactly what is covered by any insurance policy you take out. Do not assume what is covered.
