Software for Making Tax Digital ( For Flat Rate VAT )

Hi all,

I'm a self-employed Courier, have been on the Flat Rate VAT scheme for several years now.

Have had the letter from HMRC re Making Tax Digital starting in April 2022, regardless of turnover amount.

Had a look on the gov.uk site for suggested software, and it gave me a list of 433 different ones - i recognised a couple of them from TV advertising etc - Sage & Quickbooks.

Any recommendations please ?

I did find one whilst googling ( FREEAGENT )  which looks decent and has good reviews, also is free if you have business current account with Natwest, RBS, Ulster Bank or account with Mettle. Dont have any of those accounts, but Mettle looks fairly easy to set up, though thats another layer of complication.

You can do short trials of all the major software, they're all different to use, so best to find one that suits what you do and how you do it.

I'm an accountant and use Freeagent, Kashflow, Sage, Quickbooks and Xero, i.e. all the major ones.  My default recommendation is Freeagent due to it's ease of use.  I'd only be looking at the others if a client particularly disliked the freeagent look/feel or if they had greater needs that required a more complex system, but Freeagent is perfectly capable for simple small businesses, and yes, all the better if you can get it free by having a NatWest or Mettle bank account.

I spoke to a person @Freeagent today, and she was very helpful and informative, which gave a good impression, and your words reinforce that, will probably go with that one, will do the free trial for sure..

Zoho books.... going to be cheaper than anything else and is probably better as well
