Day one of the re-mortgage, and I just managed to make the first OP: £100 that came into my account unexpectedly (not that unexpectedly, for work that I did a while back, but I didn't know it would come today). It feels so nice to start "nibbling" straight away.

I am getting used to writing to myself. Since my Dad died on Tuesday, I have done a lot of finance work, but not our finances, instead making sure our Mum will cope. With our remortgage coming through the same week, we also need to do some serious planning, since our mortgage payment will go up from about £250/month to about £950/month - can't absorb that without some serious re-jigging. I had to go and do a top-up shop at Lidl, nothing exciting, just tinned tomatoes, veggie sausages, eggs, etc.

When we sorted out the remortgage we figured things out so that the payments would be possible from "normal" income - tight, but possible, and so I am keeping anything extra (from listing old stuff) as overpayments. So, even though our remortgage is only 2 days old, I managed to overpay another £180, so £280 total. Amongst everything happening this week, it's nice to feel a little bit in control.

  • Hi sabsob - i'm so sorry to hear your sad news. I hope you are managing ok and i hope your mum is ok too ((hugs)). I am sure she appreciates all your help with making sure she can manage financially - not an easy task to do.

I understand that feeling of being able to focus your mind on something you do have control over and how that helps.

And getting the remortgage through now gives you the specific figure so you know where you are at with that as well.

I am glad you were kind to yourselves having whatever you wanted when you went to the shops and a takeaway.

@StripeyTightsSpottySocks @Bargainhunter30 @edinburgher Thank you for your kind words - it's been a strange week.

I have most of this week off, on a combination of compassionate leave and annual leave - I could have had time off last week, but decided to work through, to get to the week-end, and get a number of projects into a shape where I can leave them for a bit.

Sold a bunch of stuff on Ebay (that were listed last week-end), so I have about 6 parcels to send, and once payments come through, that'll be a nice overpayment. I also sorted through some books and sold them in bulk, it'll only add about £30, but also cleared space. By the time my pay came through this morning, I had £50 in my account, so that's going straight through as overpayment, so the total there is £330.

Dinner tonight is a veggie curry - son is vegetarian, so when I find cheap meat at the end of the day in the supermarket, I cook separately (e.g. sausages for us, veggie sausages for him, or a meat lasagne for us, and the sauce base without meat on pasta for him - he doesn't like the concept of lasagne), but a big bulk veggie curry will feed us all, is super easy, and I can easily make enough to go in the freezer for another meal, too. Our veggie go-to curry is based around potatoes and chickpeas, which we all like.

I'll spend some time crafting this week, pottering, hoping to tidy the bedroom :)

Thank you @Cornish_mum :) It's an odd feeling, I forget for quite long stretches at a time.

Did a post office run and a trip to L!dl, where I nabbed a fruit and veg box, hurray! Potatoes (oh, *so* many potatoes), an aubergine, parsley, broccoli, a melon, a bag of oranges and a bag of pears, all for £1.50. The fruit will be dessert and snacks, and I think the aubergine might become part of a pasta sauce. Found a big pack of reduced pork mince for £2, plus milk and bread: £5.54 for a *lot* of food - the mince should be enough for two meals for the meat eaters in the family.

The "auction site" payout came through, and another £280 went in as OP, bringing the total up to £610...in four days. This is sheer fluke, and obviously not sustainable, but it feels nice.

I am finally getting a bit of a breather today, 8 days after my Dad died. It feels both more recent and longer ago. I have a "use everything up" soup in the slow cooker, tea will just need shoving in the oven, and, apart from some work (I'm working reduced hours this week), I have a bit of time to sort my head out. Another little payout came through, so another £20 went into the mortgage, total at £630. This will be is for at least a few days though. I'll do a bit of tidying, a bit of crafting...it's a pottering-about-kind-of-day :)
