I think it was Arla who suggested doing this some years ago, don't know if they went through with it.

Clearly they didn't (but are now), as Arla are the real name behind the "Morrisons" brand milk.

Like a previous poster, I don't remember the last time I checked the date on milk.

my rule is if it smells good and it looks ok I eat it!  I've eaten yogurts out of my fridge four months out of date that taste perfectly good with no ill effects, I think its only the elderly and infirm that need to be more careful

I get organic unhomogenised whole milk from Abel & Cole and if it's not needed straight away, I freeze it. If I run out, my local mini Tesco does organic milk, or I'll add it to a Milk & More or Waitrose order.

I've taken a food safety course from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and a fridge only slows the growth of bacteria, it doesn't stop it. It would need to be minimum -18C. The fridge needs to be at a temperature below 6C or there's no point in using it.

It's not safe to eat 4 month old yogurt. It's really irresponsible to suggest that only the elderly need to be careful. I'm not anywhere near elderly and I got e.coli 0157 from pub food and was in hospital for several days. Food poisoning can kill.

I have my level 3 Food&Hygiene so I would just like to add that whilst you are correct on a fridge slowing the growth of bacteria, that’s not the case for all. Listeria monocytogenes is able to actively grow at fridge temperature.

Ideal fridge temperature should be 5 degrees or below.

Anyway let’s get this thread back on topic. I love the fact that my supermarket veg no longer have use by dates on them and embrace the same with milk. It’s great to get some common sense back into life.

Completely different proposition: this is faeco-oral transmission caused by bad hygiene standards, not refrigeration.

I agree we need to get back on topic, though.

All of these dates on food does make you wonder how some of us “oldies” managed for so long without them.  Especially those of us who grew up without a fridge  :D
