We want to sell a diamond that had been in the family for some time. It is an old cut pear shaped diamond, over 2 carat, good clarity and colour. Diamonds of this quality (although newer cuts) sell for £15k-£20k. We have never sold vaulable jewellery before and would welcome guidance on where/how to go about it. Thanks.

For anything like that I woud aways say that your local bricks & mortar auction house is your best bet.

Don't expect to get the retail price for it though.

Thanks. We are in Brighton - would it best to go to one of the large London auction houses?

Possibly - but I would get a free valuation from your local one first and ask their advice.  The important thing is to try to get it into a specialist jewellery sale rather than their normal 'general' sale - this may mean waiting a few months but will make sure that the right buyers are there.

Bear in mind that most auctions have an online presence nowadays so anything that is likely to be in demand wil get plenty of exposure regardless of whether it is one of the larger auctions or not..
